Byeongdu Lee, APS Upgrade teams win Argonne Board of Governors Awards

Headshot of a man wearing glasses.Several members of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) team were among the dozens of Argonne employees honored this year with an Argonne Board of Governors Award. The annual awards recognize distinguished employee performance, outstanding service to the laboratory and excellence in education, safety and diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA).

Group Leader Byeongdu Lee received a Distinguished Performance Award, which recognizes an outstanding achievement (or a record of such achievements) by an employee of the laboratory in the areas of basic or applied science and engineering. Lee currently leads two groups in the X-ray Science Division: the Chemical and Materials Science group and, on an interim basis, the Structural Science group, and the suite of beamlines he is responsible for are among the most productive (in total number of papers produced) at the APS.

Lee was nominated for being a key driver in the development of X-ray instrumentation and data analysis methods that have pushed the possibilities of Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) techniques at the APS, in addition to building a strong national and scientific reputation over 20-plus years at Argonne. Lee has authored more than 280 publications, many in high-impact journals, and has dedicated his time to working with and mentoring the next generation of scientists.

Thirteen APS employees also received the James B. Porter Jr. Team Award for Outstanding Safety Performance for their work to remove the original APS storage ring and replace it with the upgraded ring. The Porter Jr. Award recognizes a team of employees working in any part of the lab who embody the principles of integrated safety management and directly contribute to the creation and sustenance of a positive safety culture and a commitment to excellence in workplace safety.

The members of the APS Upgrade storage ring team receiving the award are:

  • Ralph Bechtold, APS Engineering Support, Photon Sciences
  • Timothy Clute, APS Engineering Support, Photon Sciences
  • Daniel Dilday Jr., Nuclear Waste and Site Services, Infrastructure Services
  • Aric Donnelly, Accelerator Systems Division, Photon Sciences
  • Tiffany Freedman, Worker, Safety and Environment, Environment, Safety and Health
  • John Hoyt, APS Engineering Support, Photon Sciences
  • Kevin Knoerzer, APS Engineering Support, Photon Sciences
  • Glenn Moonier, APS Engineering Support, Photon Sciences
  • Fernando Da Silva Rafael, Accelerator Systems Division, Photon Sciences
  • Paul Rossi, Worker, Safety and Environment, Environment, Safety and Health
  • Martin Smith, Accelerator Systems Division, Photon Sciences
  • Stacy Sternberg, Radiological Protection, Environment Safety and Health
  • Greg Wiemerslage, APS Engineering Support, Photon Sciences

A second group of 15 employees from Infrastructure Services also received the James B. Porter Jr. Team Award for their driving and rigging work during the construction of the APS Upgrade. They are:

  • Randy Brown
  • Jesus Delgadillo
  • Martin Diaz
  • Jason Habbe
  • Benjamin Hulbert
  • Marcin Kaniewski
  • Joey Lanera
  • Robert Lange
  • Luis Lucero
  • Daniel Makinney
  • Brian McFadden
  • Isidro Montesinos
  • Fernando Ocampo
  • Adam Ray
  • Angel Del Rio Rodriguez
  • Mitchell Vanoskey

“It’s gratifying to see the outstanding efforts of employees recognized with these awards,” said Laurent Chapon, associate laboratory director for photon sciences, director of the APS and director of the APS Upgrade Project. “Congratulations to all of the winners for your contributions to a pivotal year in the history of the Advanced Photon Source.”
